Income Is a Series of Events: Economics in the Dimension of Time
This is Suzhou Victory Textile Co., Ltd.
Life has four basic constraints: not enough stuff, limited time, mutual dependence, and coordination. Previously, we talked about “not enough stuff”—how to divide, exchange, and manage property. Today, we add a new dimension: time.
Scarcity exists in time too. Today’s goods are “spot,” tomorrow’s are “futures.” How do we exchange spot for futures to maximize happiness? That brings us to a classic: Irving Fisher’s The Theory of Interest.
Open it. The first line stops you cold: “Income is a series of events.”
What does that mean? All goods fall into two categories: consumables and durables.
1. Consumables: One‑shot use
An apple, an egg, a glass of milk—gone in one bite. That’s a consumable. Cheese? Making it takes time, but eating it is one bite—so cheese is also a consumable. Drinking milk today or making cheese for tomorrow is a choice: spot now or futures later.
2. Durables: Value released over time
Durables are different. Their value unfolds gradually.
A painting—you must spend time appreciating it. You can’t swallow all its beauty at once. An apple tree yields ten apples this year, ten next year. You can’t eat all future apples today. Human capital is a durable—your degree, skills, experience cash out only over working years.
Professor Zhou Qiren has a gift: switching focus instantly—one moment discussing fieldwork, the next writing an article, almost zero lag. He jokes, “That’s capital too.” See? Economics in everything.
3. Children: The most special durable
When Gary Becker first said “children are durable consumer goods,” the room erupted in laughter. How can kids be goods?
Economists see differently: having children is rational investment. You spend time loving, enjoying, getting joy—that’s consumption.
I know this well. Before ten, a child is pure “consumption.” Pick him up from kindergarten, he proudly shouts, “That’s my dad!” After ten? “Just stay in the car. Don’t come out.”
4. Why more kids in poor societies?
If children are durables, why do poor societies have more, rich ones fewer?
Because durables’ value takes time to realize. The poor have no other capital—no stocks, no property, no degrees. Children are their main “asset”—future labor, future support.
The rich have plenty: houses, stocks, pensions, insurance. Children become “luxury goods”—time‑intensive, money‑intensive, returning emotion, not income.
So: poorer, more kids; richer, fewer. It’s not morality—it’s economic rationality.
5. Textiles are durables too
At Suzhou Victory Textile, we make fabric. A good garment isn’t a one‑use consumable. It stays with you over time, getting more comfortable, more character. Good fabric is a durable—its value releases with every wear.
Time is scarce. Patience is valuable. Those who understand value unfolding over time truly grasp economics’ final lesson.
