Micro-Fiction — The Marriage Breaker
After Guozi got married, his mother-in-law Lao Gu told him something that had been weighing on her mind.
Back when Guozi had just started dating her daughter, a gossipy woman from his village had shown up near their home, pretending to run into her by chance. She chatted casually, and eventually turned the conversation to Guozi. “So your daughter is marrying into that family? Oh dear, that family is dirt poor, they have a bad reputation, and they even lied about his age. You‘re pushing your daughter into a pit of fire.”
Lao Gu’s heart sank at the time. But after she got home, the more she thought about it, the more something felt wrong. “What decent person goes around badmouthing others behind their backs?” She remembered an old saying — “He who comes bearing gossip is the real troublemaker.” Lao Gu kept the matter to herself and never mentioned it to her daughter or Guozi. It wasn‘t until after the wedding that she told it as a joke. Based on her description, Guozi immediately knew who it was — no one else but Huolan from his own village.
Everyone in the village knew Huolan. She specialized in “breaking marriages.” The term “chong hun” — breaking a marriage — didn’t refer to the “chong” in “chong xi” (arranging a wedding to ward off bad luck). It was the “chong” of a punch press — smashing and shattering. Her own life was unhappy, so she couldn‘t stand to see others happy. Whenever she heard that someone was arranging a marriage, she couldn’t help but run over and say something nasty. She had a thought buried in her heart: Why should others get to be happy? Making others miserable was the only way she could feel satisfied.
Guozi remembered another incident. He had a distant uncle named Shu — honest, hardworking, but poor and tongue-tied. He‘d had many matchmaking attempts, but none succeeded. Finally, someone introduced a girl, and the girl’s parents came to “visit and inquire.” This was an old custom in northern Jiangsu — the girl‘s parents didn’t go directly to the boy‘s door. Instead, they pretended to be passersby, chatting with people in the fields to gather real information.
That day, the girl’s parents happened to run into Huolan. As soon as she heard them ask about Shu‘s family, Huolan knew immediately — these people were here to check on a match. Her eyes darted, and she opened her mouth without hesitation. “Shu? He’s already in his late thirties. The family is dirt poor, not even a decent house. He‘s had so many matchmaking attempts, but none worked out.” She added, “With conditions like that, any girl who marries him would be cursed for eight generations.”
The girl’s parents went back and called off the engagement. Shu was in his late thirties that year. The one promising match he had was shattered by Huolan‘s words.
Shu did eventually marry — a girl from out of town. She didn’t believe in those old customs. She only looked at Shu‘s character and his work ethic. “This man is honest and hardworking,” she said. “I won’t go wrong with him.” Shu finally had a family of his own. But that broken match remained a thorn in his heart that could never be pulled out.
Guozi later learned that Huolan wasn‘t the only “marriage breaker” in the village. He thought of his own uncle Daxiang’s maternal uncle. When a match was finally arranged for Daxiang, the uncle went and stirred up trouble until the marriage fell apart. Daxiang never married. He died alone. Born in the old society, he was given a heart of stone.
Later, the young people in the village all left for factory jobs in other cities. Fewer matches were made, no one came to “visit and inquire.” Young people found their own partners out of town — who still relied on village matchmaking? Huolan had no marriages left to break. She still visited one household after another, but no one talked about matches, no one gave her an opening. She sat in the sun at her doorstep, staring at the empty village road, feeling hollow inside.
She complained to the old woman next door: “There‘s not even a single match to talk about in this village anymore.” The old woman replied, “Isn’t that better? Saves you the trouble.” Huolan opened her mouth, but no words came out. It wasn‘t trouble — it was emptiness. Her whole life, she had lived by breaking other people’s fortunes. Now there was nothing left to break, and she didn‘t know what to do with herself.
One Spring Festival, Guozi ran into Huolan at the village entrance — that was before she died. She was old then — white hair, bent back — but her eyes still darted about. She greeted Guozi: “Back for the holiday? Your wife doing well?” Guozi grunted in reply and said no more.
He remembered Lao Gu’s words: “He who comes bearing gossip is the real troublemaker.”
Now Huolan is gone. The village is much quieter. Fewer matches are made, no one comes to “visit and inquire.” The village road is still there, but the darting eyes are gone, the endless mouth is gone.
Sometimes Guozi wonders: Did Huolan gain or lose in this life? She called others poor, but she was never well off herself. She said others were no good, but her own life was no better. She broke so many marriages, yet her own days never improved. But no one ever said this to her. No one dared.
The villagers had an old saying: Better to tear down ten temples than to destroy one marriage. But Huolan had destroyed more marriages than she could count. She didn’t see it as evil — she saw it as her skill.
On the day she died, few in the village came to see her off. As the coffin was carried out of the village entrance, someone whispered behind: “Over there, don‘t go ruining people anymore.”
The wind blew and scattered the words — like all the words she had spoken in her life. Scattered and forgotten.
