Seek Knowledge, Gain True Wisdom

Hello! This is Suzhou Victor Textile.

In May, the early summer air had just begun to settle over the branches. On this Sunday afternoon, I put aside the orders and machines at my textile factory and drove to Soochow University to attend Professor Chen Tao’s lecture, “The Past, Present, and Future of Robotics.”

I work in the textile industry. I thought this would be just a popular science talk to broaden my horizons. But after two hours, I realized how wrong I was — this lecture had an unexpected and deep connection to the textile industry.

Professor Chen started with the origins of industrial robots. One slide — an “industry chain map” — left a strong impression on me: upstream components like reducers, controllers, and sensors; midstream industrial and service robots; downstream connections to AI, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things. One of the largest application fields for industrial robots is automotive and textiles. Only then did I realize that the automatic winders, intelligent fabric inspection machines, and AGV carts working quietly in my factory are no longer just “lumps of iron” — they are real embodiments of robotics in the textile sector.

In the second half of the lecture, Professor Chen shifted to “Robots and the Law.” He listed a series of problems that textile business owners like me never think about but will sooner or later face: Who is responsible when a robot injures someone? If an automated quality inspection system makes a false judgment leading to a batch return, is that a product liability issue or a contract dispute? If an AGV hits someone on the factory floor, is it a workplace injury or an equipment defect? He shared a real case: in 2022, a worker illegally entered the work zone of an industrial robot in a Guangdong factory and was injured. The lawyer lost the case because he did not understand the robot’s technology (safety mechanisms, operation logs). Professor Chen said, “Technological literacy is the key to winning or losing such cases.”

Those words sent a chill down my back. In recent years, our textile factory has continuously introduced automated equipment. The machines are getting “smarter,” but how well do we really understand their “temperament”? If one day a machine breaks down, injures someone, or ruins a batch of goods, can I produce the operation logs to prove my innocence?

After the lecture, sunlight streamed through the windows of the old law school building. The “past” of robots was humanity’s desire for less labor; the “present” is the robotic arms and sensors running nonstop in our factories; and the “future” answer lies not only in technological upgrades but also in the cognitive upgrading of practitioners like us. This lecture did not teach me how to spin a finer yarn, but it showed me a longer road ahead.
