Impatience Why Interest Is the Price of Waiting
This is Suzhou Victory Textile Co., Ltd.
Today we talk about a human side of economics: impatience.
What does it mean? Simple: Would you rather have an apple today or an apple a year from now? Today, of course. A year from now, the apple might be rotten, you might have moved—or worse. The point is, people prefer to consume sooner because the future is uncertain and life is short. This “want it now” tendency is called impatience.
1. Who Is More Impatient?
Age: The elderly are more impatient than the young. The young see a long horizon; the old know time is short.
Imagination: There’s a classic experiment where kids are given a lollipop and told they’ll get a second if they wait half an hour without eating it. Those who wait usually have stronger imaginations—they can “see” the reward. Self‑discipline is really imagination.
Culture: Look at the stone buildings along the Shanghai Bund—still standing after a century. Colonists built with stone because they were used to planning long‑term. Some cultures build with wood, not because they’re poor, but because they lack that patience.
Times: In wartime, the future is foggy. Who wants to wait? Durable goods like antiques flow from war zones to peaceful areas, because people there value the future more.
2. Impatience Creates Trade
Some want goods now (spot), some are willing to wait (futures). To persuade the patient to give up their spot, you have to compensate them. That compensation is interest.
So interest rates are set by how impatient people are. The more uncertain the future, the higher the compensation, the higher the interest rate. In wartime, rates are high because everyone wants money today.
3. A Puzzle
Imagine a primitive society with two houses: one thatched hut (not durable) and one stone house (very durable). Suddenly, the stone house becomes cheaper than the hut. What does that mean?
It means people value the immediate hut more—they don’t care about the future value of the stone house. Impatience has increased. So interest rates should rise.
At Suzhou Victory Textile, we make fabrics too—some durable, some consumable. A good garment lasts years; a fast‑fashion piece fades quickly. Durables need patience, time to reveal their value. But when market interest rates shift, patience shifts, and so do our orders.
Understand impatience, and you understand interest rates—and a lot of human behavior.
