The Art of Disciplining Subordinates: Lessons from “In the Name of People”

The Art of Disciplining Subordinates: Lessons from “In the Name of People” 职场驯徒术:从《人民的名义》看领导如何敲打下属

This is Suzhou Victory Textile Co., Ltd.

People crave being liked by others. To achieve that, they willingly accept social rules and follow the advice of authority figures. Our school education reinforces this habit: obey teachers, comply with leaders. Only the strongest-minded individuals can resist conformity. As a result, most apprentices or subordinates are, to varying degrees, influenced or even manipulated by their mentors or superiors. If you give up guiding your apprentice, he may gradually turn to others or strike out on his own.

In the hit drama In the Name of People, there is a brilliant scene of “disciplining an apprentice.” The deputy mayor of Jingzhou is found corrupt. Party secretary Li Dakang wants to detain him first to save face. But Chen Hai (head of the anti-corruption bureau), Ji Changming (provincial chief prosecutor), and Gao Yuliang (provincial political-legal secretary) all oppose. At this moment, Qi Tongwei—director of the public security department and Gao’s former student—openly supports Li Dakang. The corrupt official escapes in the chaos. Why does Qi openly defy his mentor?

Late at night, Gao Yuliang calls Qi to his doorstep for a classic “warning session.” He avoids talking in the car (the driver is present) and doesn’t wait until inside (to avoid associating home with humiliation).

Gao cuts straight to the point: “You want to help Dakang gain investigative power to secure his vote for your promotion to vice-governor, right? I’m not optimistic.” Qi admits it. This is smart: when a leader accuses you of hidden motives, never deny immediately; first show remorse.

Then Gao analyzes the situation: the new provincial secretary, Sha Ruijin, won’t easily promote a leftover from the previous administration. And Gao himself is the one who knows the landscape. Implication: Who should you really win over? Li Dakang, aiming for governor, will compete directly with Gao. Qi is terrified. He responds brilliantly: “If Secretary Sha weren’t here, you’d be the perfect secretary.” That’s a “childish remark”—a way of flattering.

In The Deer and the Cauldron, Wei Xiaobao watches Master Hong’s martial arts and shouts, “You scared me to death!” Master Hong is delighted because childish words feel sincere. Qi, in his forties, says something childish—not political incompetence, but a tail-wagging gesture: “I’m still your child.” Gao accepts the play, saying “Don’t talk nonsense.” That’s forgiveness. But the warning continues: “I must keep my position, and you must keep yours.” The second half is key.

Qi tests the rumor of “Sha-Li pairing.” Gao retorts, “So you’re cozying up to Dakang?” Then he laughs to save face, and finally says, “Be cautious. Come inside.” —Master has his own plan.

Here’s Gao’s five-step method for disciplining an apprentice:

1. Directly expose the betrayal intention.
2. Analyze the situation: leaving the mentor leads to certain loss.
3. Emphasize that your fate is in my hands.
4. Accept the apology and goodwill gesture.
5. Warn again: don’t try such tricks.

Psychologically, this works. Most people obey authority in groups. I once interviewed a fake professor who led disciples to scam university students into suburban brainwashing sessions. After cutting off family and friends, the victims, fearing isolation, believed everything the fake professor said. Same in the workplace: a mentor has natural authority over an apprentice. If you see him as a key part of your team, invest effort in him. When he wavers, step in promptly—just as parents tell children, “Mom and Dad will protect you.”

Of course, warning alone isn’t enough; you must also teach. Inside the house, Gao continues: “Dakang wants to detain the deputy mayor to avoid hurting his city’s GDP. Otherwise, he won’t become governor. The ‘Sha-Li pairing’ is a joke. If Dakang fails, the provincial committee remains in our hands. So you shouldn’t help him.” Qi smooths things over: “I thought, since we’re all your students, if no one spoke for Dakang, it might seem our group was ganging up on him…” Gao laughs and scolds, “You’re full of ideas, just not in the right place.” —He accepts the explanation in a fatherly tone.

Managers, remember: timely warning plus patient teaching will keep your apprentice loyal by your side.
