Usury: Exploitation or Compensation?
This is Suzhou Victory Textile Co., Ltd.
Today we tackle a loaded term—usury. Mention it, and people think exploitation, sin. But from an economics perspective, it’s more nuanced.
1. Interest Is Compensation
We’ve discussed “impatience”—humans naturally prefer now over later. Tomorrow’s apple is less certain than today’s. To persuade someone to delay consumption and accept uncertainty, you must compensate them. That compensation is interest.
So as long as time flows, interest is natural. It’s not exploitation—it’s reward for waiting and risk.
2. Why the Historical Hatred?
Strangely, for millennia, nearly all religions, laws, and cultures condemned interest. Aristotle said “money cannot breed money.” Medieval theologians called it double charging. Shakespeare’s Shylock, demanding a pound of flesh, became the eternal villain.
Why? A key reason: ancient societies were wildly uncertain. Wars, famines, short lifespans—the future was foggy. Annual interest rates often hit 30%, 50%, even higher. Such rates did feel like profiteering from misery. So people hated it.
But after the 16th century, technology improved, lifespans lengthened, societies stabilized. Real interest rates naturally fell. Only then did societies gradually accept interest.
3. Who Gets Hurt by Interest Caps?
What happens if you forcibly cap interest rates?
First, nobody lends. The rich pretend to be poor, hoard cash under mattresses—why lend with no return and all the risk?
Second, black markets boom. When official channels close, underground ones open. Loan sharks thrive, with even higher rates and harsher collection.
Third, the poor suffer most. Policies say “low-interest loans for the poor.” Result? The connected rich grab those quotas; the poor can’t even apply.
An economist once noted: To help the poor borrow, rates should be slightly higher—high enough that the powerful ignore them, so loans actually reach the needy.
4. Lessons Today
Look at online lending platforms: advertised rates low, but add service fees, late penalties—effective annual rates often exceed 36%. That’s price controls in disguise—low on paper, high in reality.
A healthy lending market lets rates reflect risk. Good credit, low rate; high risk, higher rate. Then lenders dare to lend, and borrowers get access.
At Suzhou Victory Textile, we don’t do finance, but we understand one principle: When prices are distorted, markets find twisted ways to compensate. Better to guide than to block.
Next time you hear “usury,” pause. Think about the logic behind interest—respect for waiting, pricing of risk.
